Lighting tips for the darker seasons

As the nights draw in and we're reaching for the light switch at 4pm, now is definitely the time of year to revamp your lighting design. Play with different combinations to make the most of the cosy season while daylight is limited.

And let's face it, we all hate the dredded Top Light (IYKYK), so I'll take you through 5 bright ideas to lighten up your home this autumn/winter season.

Firstly, let me give you a crash-course in lighting:

  • Ambient Lighting: This is your main light source. It could be a statement pendant, recessed lights or a well-placed chandelier.

  • Task Lighting: Focused, functional lighting designed to highlight specific areas for activities like reading, cooking or working. Think desk lamps, under-cabinet lights or reading lamps.

  • Accent Lighting: These are the fun pieces - table lamps, wall sconces or fairy lights that add personality.

Layers

Think of a room in layers — bottom, middle and top. Each layer needs its own light source.

For the bottom, consider floor lamps or uplights to brighten dark corners. In the middle, table lamps or wall sconces add warmth and create cosy zones. Up top, overhead lights like pendants or chandeliers give overall brightness.

Each works on its own (great for flexibility), but together, they create a balanced, inviting space that’s both functional and full of personality.

Warm Lights

What we see influences how we feel. Staring at a frosty winter scene can make us feel cold, while the flicker of a warm open fire can trick our senses into feeling warm and toasty. The same can be done with lighting.

Swap out cool-toned bulbs for warmer ones. Look for bulbs in the 2700K to 3000K range. They give off a cosy, golden glow, like candlelight without the wax spills.

Fun fact: I never watched Game of Thrones because the first few episodes were set in the winter and it made me feel so cold and I'm just not here for that. Give me all the warmth!

Mirrors & Corners

Mirrors aren’t just for checking your outfit — they’re secret lighting boosters!

Place a mirror opposite a window or behind a lamp and watch it bounce light around like magic. It'll make the whole room feel brighter and more spacious. Plus, it’s like getting extra light for free, which is a win-win in my eyes!

Also, don’t let dark corners ruin your vibe! Add a floor lamp, an uplight, or even a small accent light, to those neglected spots. It’s an easy way to create depth and a cosy, welcoming glow.

Dimmer Switches

Dimmer switches are a game-changer as they let you set the mood with just a twist or tap. Want bright and energising light for morning routines? Done! Or soft and cosy for a movie night or dinner party? No problem!

Also, by saving energy they extend the life of your bulbs.

Install them in spaces where versatility is key, like the living room, bedroom or dining area. Once you have them, you’ll wonder how you lived without them!

Fairy Lights

Ok, so this may be a slightly controversial one as an interior designer, but we proudly endorse fairy lights here. They’re cute, cosy, and add an element of fun to any space. Whether it’s winter warmth or summer sparkle, they’re versatile and playful.

Why not drape them across a mantel, weave them into greenery, or tuck them behind sheer curtains? Trust me...

Lighting doesn’t have to be serious and regimented - have fun with it!
